Week 2 Project 2C- CA CHOICE

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/education_in_california

I decided to research these as a college student myself I was unaware of the classification of what makes a college a UC or CSU or etc. As I get closer to completing my degree at the Junior college I must asses what is the next step for myself, at this point I'm debating either Sacramento State or Sonoma State. I felt it was a perfect time to learn about further education.

Further Education in California is similar to humanities in the regards that schools are highly analytical, speculative, critical and some are more distinguished then others. These education campuses are broken into four different sub-sections.

The first of which is University California (UC) has ten major campuses. Theses Campuses are located in Berkeley, Los Angeles, San Diego, Davis, Santa Cruz, Santa Barbara, Irvine, Riverside, Merced and San Francisco. Each campus is headed by a chancellor which is appointed by a board of regents. The UC system only accepts students within the top 12.5% of college-bound students.

The second of which is California State University (CSU) is the largest university system in the United States. CSU only accept the top 1/3 of all college-bound students.

Thirdly we have California community colleges. These include vocational education, remedial education, continuing education and the general education which is transferable to a CSU or UC.

Last but not least is the private universities which may include religious and special-non purpose institutions.

Week 2 Project 2B : CA Museum

Humanities is the study of natural and social sciences with an emphasis on human conditions. These are usually sub grouped in the study of languages, law, literature, performing arts, philosophy, religion and visual arts. I decided to do my Museum project on the San Francisco Exploratorium. The exploratorium was founded in 1969 by physicist Dr. Frank Oppenheimer. The exploratorium specialises in teaching science through hands on experiences, this has allowed them to win the webby award for best science site five times since the year 1997. This study of science through visual arts/exhibits is a precise connection to humanities.

In researching the exploratorium it brought back memories of my childhood and field trips to the museum. Little did I know a subject that I dislike (science) was so fun and interesting if presented properly. I've decided that I would like to take my little sister one weekday as a reminder of my feelings to this place.

I think wikipedia should have provided us with more information in regards to the actual exhibits provided at the museum;instead of a simple description of the pitch black labyrinth that requires an extensive sense of touch to navigate.

Week 2 Project 2A : CA place

Humanities is the study of human conditions it approaches the arts of natural and social science.Sebastopol is connected to the study of humanities because of it vast differences in their agriculture and there concerns with the environment as a whole. Sebastopol prides it self on being a nuclear free city and has several sister cities they communicate with on a normal basis. They have grown from a town of apples to a city of apples, and grapes.

I decided to do my California place report on the town of Sebastopol,Ca. When I think of sebastopol I feel a great fondness in my heart. I've spent my entire childhood living there and have watched as the town progressed into the small city it is now. Sebastopol has grown to a more culturally diverse city with three Starbucks in it. It saddens me to think that i will never be able to afford to own a house in this town because i feel that it is a GREAT place to raise a family.

One thing that I learned in my research is that"sebastopol first came into use in the late 1850's as a result of a prolonged and lively fist fight in the newly formed town, which was likened to the long british siege of the russian seaport of Sevastopol during the then-raging crimean war." Week 1 Project 1C

For this assignment I decided to pick two people at random; Jena Barcojo and Joseph Fitch.

Jena Baracojo is taking this class to hopefully become more worldly and further her understanding of the arts. While Joseph Fitch is hoping to learn more about other cultures, religions, races and ethnicity's.

Jena Baracojo wrote about Paulo Freire in a almost autobiography format. This made me feel uncomfortable with my decision to write about it like I did. I was able to learn from Jena's assignment that Paulo friere died of a heart attack and as she put "Even though Paulo was absent for his people he was still reaching out to them through his words, and hopes to challenging the minds of those and to start exercise his theory."

In reading Joseph Fitch's article on Paulo Freire, I am immediately drawn to his nice formatting and titles. It is obvious that he has some web-page experience. He articulates his writings very well and in all honesty made my work feel in superior. Unfortunately I was unable to to learn any new facts from his writings because we had used the same sources. I did learn that I should have cited my sources.

Week 1 Project 1B

Paulo Freire was born in Recife, Brazil in 1921 it was there that he learned the harsh reality of poverty and literacy. Paulo spent his early twenties learning and mastering the psychology of language and eventually taught over 300 sugarcane workers to read and to write in approximately 45 days.

In 1967 Freire published his first book, only to follow it with his most famous writing Pedagogy of the Oppressed just two years later. He quickly became known for his contributions to the psychology of education and his updated theories which are bow called pedagogy. Paulo worked on the establishing a better description for the student teacher relationship. He simply thought of it as a teacher who learns and a leaner who teaches. It was due to his diplomatic thinking that made many universities (including UCLA) create institutions in his honor.

The website http://www.infed.org/thinkers/et-freir.htm claims that Paulo Freire had five aspects of work that were particularly significant. First of all was his emphasis on dialogue and his general concern with education. Secondly, Paulo was concerned with the praxis-action. Thirdly, Friere's desire to wanting to name the world. Fourthly, his insistence on educational activity. And lastly, the number of informal educators that shared a connection with Paulo Freire.
